White Matter Changes induced by Mindfulness Meditation

Using diffusion tensor imaging, this study showed changes in white matter axial diffusivity after just two weeks of a form of mindfulness meditation called integrative mind-body training (IMBT), which was associated with improved mood. The research also showed improved white matter efficiency (as measured by fractional anisotropy) in areas surrounding the anterior cingulate cortex after four weeks with reduced radial diffusivity and and axial diffusivity on MRI.
